John Moore, director of the upcoming Max Payne film adaptation starring Mark Wahlberg, has a few words to say about the Motion Picture Association of America--the United States' ratings group for films--and most of those words are profane.
"The Motion Picture Association of America gave The Dark Knight a PG-13 rating and basically sucked Warner Bros.' cock," Moore said to DasGamer, referring to the blockbuster film sometimes thought too dark for the PG-13 rating.
Moore's outburst stems from attempts to secure a PG-13 rating for Max Payne, which would theoretically allow for some mature content while avoiding the age restrictions and reduced revenues of an R rating.
"I have a serious amount of issues with the MPAA," he continued. "The MPAA changes their rules willy-nilly and it depends on who's seeing your actual movie a...
Are you well-versed in your first-person shooter history? Do you like deathmatch? Do you have all the games made by FPS genre innovator and Rage developer id Software?
If your answers were "no," "yes," and "no," then this weekend is the weekend for you! Valve just announced that its digital distribution service Steam has a weekend sale for all id Software games, and they're all 50 percent off. But wait, there's more! Like this quote from Valve's Doug Lombardi:
"This includes the id Super Pack for only $34.99 (over $200 worth of games). Or take 50% off individual titles such as Doom, Quake, Wolfenstein, Commander Keen, Heretic, and Hexen. Offer ends Monday, September 8."
Shacknews readers are reminded that this very site started as a blog centered on id's seminal shooter Quake and is an essential part of gaming history.
Microsoft has finally fessed up--Nintendo's Wii has won this generational battle in the console wars.
In a reversal of its "we're winning if you don't count the Wii" policy, the company behind the Xbox 360 has acknowledged the success of Nintendo's sold-out, remote-waggling wonder box and instead declared victory over rival Sony and its PlayStation 3.
In his best PR voice, Microsoft VP Don Mattick told BusinessWeek, "I'm not at a point where I can say we're going to beat Nintendo ... [but] we will sell more consoles this generation than Sony."
As of March of this year, worldwide console sales are listed below. Since then, the Wii has come close to 30 million sold and the PS3 has topped 14 million, but Microsoft has not released numbers for the same period.
Codemasters has provided the first screenshots of Asobo Studios' open-terrain off-road racer FUEL. The screenshots show the game's "alternate present" world where climate changed has ravaged the planet's climate and racers compete for fuel.
FUEL will include a variety of locales, like forests, mountains and deserts, and both two-wheel and four-wheel racing. Codemasters promises the globally-warmed title will arrive in 2009 on PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.
Though many celebrate consoles for bringing video games into the mainstream, developer Lorne Lanning believes that consoles are holding the industry back due to rising development costs.
"I think the consoles are a problem," he told GameDaily BIZ. "Years ago I was excited about consoles, but anything that makes development more expensive, rather than better, faster, cheaper, I think is a step backwards."
The creator of console titles such as Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee (PC, PSX) and Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath (Xbox), Lanning sees the PC market as more exciting because the platform allows "for more smaller games to be sold that can be delive...
